Today, in the United States, we celebrate the 248th year of “The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,” known as The Declaration of Independence.
On July 4, 1776, which was also on a Thursday, the world first encountered a remarkable sentence that had evidently never before been conceived:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
While this document was crafted by imperfect men, they were men who, as the most common third verse of “America The Beautiful” proclaims, “Who more than self their country loved and mercy more than life!”
