“Seek the compass; check the maps.” Claude Hickman
Over the years, my dad accumulated a not-so-small stockpile of folding road maps. Obviously, most of them are from a pre-Google Maps era. It’s a fairly impressive collection… one which I have inherited. 😳😀
Related, several years ago, I had the privilege of being part of a gathering of men who met together for a few days each May. Most of us were involved in some sort of itinerant (traveling) ministry and our summers were simultaneously rewarding and wearying.
So, each May, we looked forward to spending a few days together before “hitting the road” separately. (Back in those days, we used lots of folding road maps!)
During those few years, one of the men that I had the pleasure of meeting with at those gatherings was Claude Hickman. The Lord truly used him in my life to expand my view of the greatness of God and about His love for the whole world.
I suppose I’ve repeatedly read and given away Claude’s book, Live Life on Purpose: God’s Purpose. Your Life. One Journey. more often than any other, especially gifting a copy to young men and women when they graduate from high school or college.
The premise of Claude’s book is that, while maps can be important, our lives should be lived more by a compass and not only by a road map. We need a North Star to guide us whenever the path of life goes off course or we encounter unexpected detours.
“The great thing about a compass is it doesn’t depend on you. It is grounded in something outside of yourself.” Claude Hickman
May today’s issue of one24worship be used to help stir us to live by the compass of God’s purpose for our our lives, rather than a road map of our own design or expectation.
Enjoy!
David

Four Observations
3 Reasons Why God Doesn’t Give You a Map - by Michael Kelley at MichaelKelley.co
Excerpt: “Surely you’ve had the same moment that I have, when thinking about the future, of wishing that God would simply give us a map. In so doing, we would know all the twists and turns we will eventually have to take during life. That we could be prepared for this or that thing that was coming, to know in advance what lies before us, and to operate with a sense of certainty as we make our way through the years.” 👉 Read More…
Solitude And Silence - by FullStrength.org
Excerpt: “Practicing solitude and silence does not come naturally. It is easier for some than for others. Yet without it, you miss the richness and depth of a walk with Christ that can come no other way. What does it say about your own sense of self-sufficiency if you ignore this practice?” 👉 Read More…
FOR WORSHIP LEADERS: How to Remedy Stand and Watch Worship - by Rich Muchow at WorshipLeader.com
Excerpt: “While some churches have purposefully chosen a non-participatory strategy for their worship services, many churches value congregational participation for their services, and more than a few would like to have increased crowd engagement in their services. Unfortunately, there is a lot of Standing and Watching in worship services designed to be participatory.” 👉 Read More…

The compass and the map. Such strong lessons on following God through out our lives. Also, finishing your journey of life, with the Lord leading the way. I was the map reader whenever we took trips to unknown territory. I did find out, that sometimes, we would go down the wrong road. Sometimes, it was a good thing, because we saw things that were so beautiful. Like the river that flowed around the town. The
Cherry trees that lined the streets with beautiful cherry blossoms. Other times, the wrong turn was difficult to travel. The highway turned into a gravel road, with deep ruts that were difficult to get out of. Sometimes, we would get stuck in the mud, but the map always showed us how to get back to the main highway. Sort of like life, we may make a wrong turn but as children of God, He shows us how to get back on the narrow road, when we make a wrong turn. I know in the scriptures, many of the great men of God made wrong turns. Sometimes, they learned the first time they made a wrong turn and they turned around and followed the path that God had given them. Others like Sampson, suffered greatly, before he realized he had crossed over the road prepared for him. Sampson is one of the men I find sympathy for. He could not turn around and go back the right way, but he was willing to give his life to make things right with God. As, I read this article, I thought of your father, while he was traveling. You said, " when you asked where he was in his trip, he would give you the mile marker number." Makes me smile when I think of all the maps he, as your father, left for you. God as your heavenly Father, sent Jesus to show you and the world the narrow way. He is the way, the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father except through Him. God bless you as you travel, teach and preach for the Lord.
