LIGHT SHINING THROUGH A TATTERED SHADE
I own an antique lamp.
I own this antique lamp because my parents owned the antique lamp and it was in the house I grew up in… for my entire life.
I don’t know where it came from or how my parents came to own it.
Perhaps it’s a family heirloom or just a lamp that my mom found, liked, and purchased.
I just know that it’s been in my family for as long as I can remember.
The lamp has provided wonderful light for many decades. So many decades, in fact, that the cloth material on the antique fabric lamp shade has now become brittle and prone to tear easily.
I’ve looked into recovering the shade at some point, but I’ll more likely purchase a replacement shade - at least until I find the opportunity to tackle such a DIY project. 😉
In the meantime, I’m thinking of this tattered lamp shade today as a picture of how real life works.
It’s a simple observation…
The very thing that allows the light to shine the brightest is the fact that it’s torn and tattered. In fact, the brightest light shines through the tatters and tears.
As Jesus said in Matthew 5:14a…
“You are the light of the world.”
Now, to be sure, the only reason that we can be called “the light of the world” is because Jesus said of Himself in John 8:12a…
“I am the light of the world.”
Even though we can be prone to tear at times and perhaps become brittle as we encounter the trials and difficult circumstances in life, for those who know Jesus as Savior and Lord, there’s a Light that can shine brightly still underneath it all… and through it all!
Let’s remember, as one24worshipers, the Light shines the brightest through a tattered shade!
Enjoy!
David
One Verse
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” Matthew 5:14 ESV
Two Quotes
Aaron Joseph Hall
“I'm learning that ‘staying the course’ isn't about my own strength or determination—it's about receiving His daily renewal that enables me to keep running without growing weary, even when the path seems difficult.” Aaron Joseph Hall
Chris McKinney
“Your purpose isn’t stuck — it’s waiting on the other side of obedience.” Chris McKinney
Four Observations
1. Why Heart Posture Matters - by Adam Erlichman at BiblicalLeadership.com
“Everything starts, stems, and proceeds from the heart. Heart posture matters.” Adam Erlichman
Excerpt: “Many people know the Bible well yet live unchanged lives. Why? A person's heart posture matters. Accumulating knowledge without a proper heart posture leads to dangerously deceiving and treacherous roads for the Christian. It self-deceives the Christian who is constantly around things of God, yet not necessarily with Him. It determines our trajectory for spiritual growth and regulates our nearness to God.” 👉 Read More…
2. Not Just a Tech Guy: Discovering God’s Timing in Unexpected Places - by Shaun Miller at churchproduction.com
“God isn't using me as a pawn in a cosmic game of chance. He has put each and every one of us here for such a time as this.” Shaun Miller
Excerpt: “I don't allow anyone on my volunteer team to ever say, ‘I am only.’ I am only a camera person, or I only put up the song lyrics. That's ridiculous because each and every one of us plays a role in reaching our community and beyond. That camera person is capturing a service that could be shared to an unsaved friend--and it could make all the difference. They are here for such a time as this.” 👉 Read More…
3. 8 Reasons Why Worship Is More Than Just Music - by The Staff at ChurchLeaders.com
“The importance of worship in church is closely tied to how we live Monday through Saturday, not just what happens on Sunday morning.” Staff at Church Leaders
Excerpt: “When believers gather, worship should be a central and holistic part of the experience. It is not confined to the melodies we sing but is instead a lifestyle of surrender, gratitude, and reverence toward God. Recognizing the full scope of worship helps the church grow in spiritual depth, unity, and purpose.” 👉 Read More…

Staying the course reminds me of, of the broad way and the narrow way. Keeping our eyes open to what's in front of us, is an essential part of staying on the narrow road. I like your comparison to your lamp and the tattered material. Light does shine brighter through holes in the material of a tattered shade, or through leaves in a tree, when the winds blows the leaves apart. It also shines in a person's eyes when they are studying God's word. Have you ever realized, how many songs have come from the scripture of 2nd Samuel ch 22 ? It is amazing. If you want your lamp fixed, I can do it for you. I am a good at fixing things. Thanks for the newsletter, I enjoyed it very much.
