AN ENQUIRY INTO THE OBLIGATIONS OF CHRISTIANS
On May 12, 1789, exactly 233 years ago this coming Monday, William Carey published his pamphlet entitled, “An Enquiry Into the Obligations of Christians…”
It was written due to a lack of acceptance concerning Carey’s encouragement to take the gospel to the ends of the world.
“Shortly after he was ordained, he shared his burden and vision for reaching people with the gospel of Jesus Christ through missions. To this passionate plea to fellow ministers of the gospel, an older minister interrupted and rebuked Carey by saying, ‘Young man, sit down! You are an enthusiast. When God pleases to convert the heathen, he'll do it without consulting you or me.’
In response, he penned the work…” 1
While William Carey’s pamphlet is “dated” by today’s standards, it’s worth acknowledging that his writings and his life helped to launch a world-wide missionary movement, rightfully earning him the moniker, “The Father of the Modern Missions Movement.”
Carey believed that Jesus' Great Commission applied to all Christians until the end of all time.
I do, too.
That’s why I’ve chosen verses from Matthew 28 as our one24worship Verse/Passage this week, as well as two of William Carey’s well-known sentences for our one24worship Two Quotes.
Until His renown is known among every tribe, tongue, peoples, and nation!
Enjoy!

One Verse/Passage
“And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’” Matthew 28:18-20 ESV

Four Observations
1. Which Biography of William Carey Should I Read? - by M. R. Conrad at RootedThinking.com
Excerpt: “Author Timothy George’s Faithful Witness: The Life and Mission of William Carey stands out as the most riveting biography of William Carey. How can the life of the Father of Modern Missions be anything but an exciting testimony to God’s work? Carey’s faithful walk with God, persistent plodding in ministry, and astounding influence both in India and throughout the world encourage all who read of his life to ‘expect great things from God: attempt great things for God.’” 👉 Read More…

2. The Three (or Four) Schools of Singing - by Tim Challies at Challies.com
Excerpt: “As we consider how we worship, we need to acknowledge that God calls each one of us to sing. We are to sing even if we are untrained, even if we are unskilled, and even if we are self-conscious. And if we are to sing, don’t you think God means for us to sing out, to sing loud, to sing as if our singing really matters? God calls upon the heavens and the mountains to sing and commands the beasts of the field and birds of the heavens to praise him. Who are we to lag behind the animals? Who are we to defy God when all of creation obeys?” 👉 Read More…
3. What Does It Mean to Be "Fully Committed" to God? - by Brandon Cox at WalkHumble.com
Excerpt: “We often tell people that Christianity isn’t about having the right religion but rather about having a relationship with God. How many of your relationships are defined by a list of activities you’ve committed to complete? Checking all the boxes won’t necessarily make your relationship stronger. Relationships are matters of the heart.” 👉 Read More…

BONUS OBSERVATIONS:
80th Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day: Time of Celebration, Reflection - by U. S. Department of Defense at Defense.gov
Excerpt: “On May 8, 1945 - known as Victory in Europe Day or V-E Day - celebrations erupted around the world to mark the end of World War II in Europe.
The war had been raging for almost five years when U.S. and Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944. The invasion signaled the beginning of the end for Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany. In less than a year, Germany would surrender and Hitler would be dead.” 👉 Read More…
It was 80 years ago today, May 8, 1945, when Germany unconditionally surrendered to the Allies.
Since World War II ended, veterans, family members, and men and women throughout Europe and America have marked V-E Day annually.
Today, it is our privilege to honor their service and sacrifice.
Happy 80th V-E Day today!
111th Anniversary of Happy Mother’s Day! - by Jessie Kratz from Pieces of History at Archives.gov
Excerpt: “Although it was celebrated in several states for years, the first time Mother’s Day became recognized as a U.S. federal holiday was on May 11, 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson issued a Presidential Proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as ‘Mother’s Day.’
He called for flags around the country to be flown ‘as a public expression of our love and reverence we have for the mothers of our country.’” 👉 Read More…
It has been 111 years ago today, on May 8, 1914, that a Joint Resolution was approved “designating the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day, and for other purposes.”
The next day, May 9th, President Woodrow Wilson issued this Proclamation…
Wonder what President Wilson thought the Joint Resolution had in mind when they included the additional phrase, “and for other purposes.” 🤔 😀 dg
For many, Mother’s Day this year be a wonderful time of celebrating motherhood, both for parents and for children. For others, this occasion will bring a mixture of tender (or stronger) emotions.
Regardless, this Mother’s Day, I’d like to encourage us to be present to God, ourselves, and each other, and to gratefully express “our love and reverence we have for the mothers of our country.”
Happy 111th Mother’s Day this Sunday!
Until next week,

I loved the article about William Carey. He was far a ove his time, in how the ministry, of Jesus Christ, should or could be shared. However, my heart always clings to music and singing. This week brought a wonderful memory of music back to me. In a previous church, when I was about 27 years old, a man who played the guitar heard me sing. He asked me if I would go to the nursing homes on Saturdays, and sing with him. I said yes and was blessed meet a wonderful gentleman, who lived ay the nursing home. He loved my singing and wrote a poem about me. I found the poem this week in an old foot locker that I put it in, many years ago. It says;
She has the voice of angel and a face we all should love and I know she was sent from heaven above. To cheer us on our way, and make us all feel merry and brighten our lonely days. She sings about Christ our Savior who died upon the tree. He came to this world to save us from our misery. You can tell by her face she meant it. She sings so honest and sweet. I have been in lots of places and no one like her to meet. Although, I do not know her name to me it is all the same. She is guided by Christ the Savior to cheer us on our way. We hope to reach heaven's portal and there forever to stay.
This is why I sing.
He died a few month's after he wrote this. He had one leg missing and usually kept
to himself. The nurses told me he never came out of his room to visit anyone, except when my friend and I came to sing. I am so glad God put a love in my heart for music and for people who need to hear music, in their life. Someday, I will see this wondeful man again and I believe God will be smiling.
